1. 28, 31
The difference is 3. 25 + 3 = 28, then 31.
2. 31, 34
The difference is 3. 28 + 3 = 31, then 34.
3. 44, 51
The difference is 7. 37 + 7 = 44, then 51.
4. 47, 56
The difference is 9. 38 + 9 = 47, then 56.
5. -6n + 26
Common difference -6, so start with -6n. -6 × 1 = -6; the first term is 20, so adjust by 26. nth term = -6n + 26
6. 3n + 11
Common difference 3, so start with 3n. 3 × 1 = 3; the first term is 14, so adjust by 11. nth term = 3n + 11
7. 7n + 5
Common difference 7, so start with 7n. 7 × 1 = 7; the first term is 12, so adjust by 5. nth term = 7n + 5
8. 7n + 10
Common difference 7, so start with 7n. 7 × 1 = 7; the first term is 17, so adjust by 10. nth term = 7n + 10
9. -3n + 17; 50th term = -133
Common difference -3, so start with -3n. -3 × 1 = -3; the first term is 14, so adjust by 17. nth term = -3n + 17
10. -6n + 19; 50th term = -281
Common difference -6, so start with -6n. -6 × 1 = -6; the first term is 13, so adjust by 19. nth term = -6n + 19
11. 8n − 3; 50th term = 397
Common difference 8, so start with 8n. 8 × 1 = 8; the first term is 5, so adjust by -3. nth term = 8n − 3
12. 7n + 11; 50th term = 361
Common difference 7, so start with 7n. 7 × 1 = 7; the first term is 18, so adjust by 11. nth term = 7n + 11
Worked examples

- 35 + 6 = 41, then 47.
- Answer: 41, 47
Find the nth term of 11, 13, 15, 17, …
- Common difference 2, so start with 2n.
- 2 × 1 = 2; the first term is 11, so adjust by 9.
- nth term = 2n + 9
- Answer: 2n + 9
Find the nth term of 7, 1, -5, -11, … and the 50th term.
- Common difference -6, so start with -6n.
- -6 × 1 = -6; the first term is 7, so adjust by 13.

Common mistakes
What learners typically get wrong, and how to fix it.
Writes n + 3 for a sequence going up in 3s.
Correction: Going up in 3s means 3n.
Forgets to adjust for the first term.
Correction: Compare 3n with the actual sequence.
Teacher tips
- · Line the sequence up under the times table to find the adjustment.
Parent tips
- · Track weekly savings and predict week 10.
Real-life applications
- · Taxi fares, saving the same amount each week.
